Praying for God’s Will

And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will.’" Matthew 26:39 (NASB)

That same night less than an hour later in Gethsemane with His Disciples, Jesus would express this same sentiment in prayer to the Lord. Jesus is seen repeating this request to God: for His Father’s will to be done over His own (Matthew 26:42, 44). Praying for God’s will to be done is not just for desperate circumstances, but it is also for our everyday use. Jesus includes this desire for God’s will to be done in His instructions for us to pray as He does in “The Lord’s Prayer” (Matthew 6:10). Is this your heart’s desire and motivation each time you make a prayer request? Let us pray together…

Father God, we understand that You are Sovereign, having unlimited power and sovereign control over the affairs of nature and all history. Our awareness of this facet of Your nature, fills us with awe and with a humble hope-filled attitude fixed on Your good plans designed for us. Our hearts brim over with warm thankfulness, gratitude, and appreciation for the gift of being chosen as Your children, Thank You for the loving, tender, merciful way You care for us and the grace You give us. We praise and lift Your Holy Name to worship You in Spirit and truth. We give You honor for all the great things You have done in us. Because You know all things including all our thoughts, help guard our hearts, when we are in a time of deep sorrow and suffering, as many in our country are today dealing with uncertainty, health issues and economic recovery. Help us to make a habit of choosing to ask for Your will to be done over our will in all our prayers, not only for ourselves but for others as we intercede on their behalf. Forgive us for thinking we know best when making requests. Help us to choose to surrender to Your desire and will. Help us to be generous in our prayers for others, praying blessings over them. Give us strength to serve others, so that in everything You will be praised through Jesus Christ. In Jesus’ powerful Name we pray, amen.
